Balanced Nutrition

Kate : October 18, 2011 7:18 pm : About Me

Many many years ago I started to think that the food I ate had something to do with the way I felt. I had suffered from food sensitivities my whole life which cropped up every once in a while as eczema, frequent colds, or skin eruptions. The influence of 2 Dietician friends and a border-line raw food Boyfriend led me to food research that was showing me how a plant-based diet could cure all of my maladies, and in fact, I even read that Vegetarians just don’t ever get sick!

This was very enticing and for the sake of my health I slowly gave up meat…then dairy…then eggs. And became a vegan. I also became a yoga teacher at this time and was surrounded with positive reinforcement that yes indeed I was on the right path of health. I was part of a community of people that were always happy, never got sick, and always seemed to have it together.

My research continued and became convinced that Raw food was the lifestyle of choice to cure allergies and digestive discomfort. I lived as a Raw Foodist for 1.5years. The first 6 weeks felt AMAZING! And the following 72 I struggled. My energy was low, I was hungry all the time, I had stomach aches regularly, I had food poisoning 4 times in that period (from food I had made!) I was ungrounded, I became emaciated and constantly felt like I was not doing it RIGHT. I continued to read raw food books to figure out the secret to maintaining this diet. This diet that was supposed to make me feel and look amazing. For a while I thought the Green Smoothie was the solution, then there was bee pollen, cacao, goji berries and a collection of other heal all Super Foods.

I did not feel amazing, I did not look amazing, I was not Healthy. I was drained and under-nourished.

I even started to experience the symptoms of auto-immune conditions. My joints started to swell and ache.

I was not listening to my body. My type-A controlling personality was trying to over power it.

And I started to notice that the other “healthy” people around me weren’t always at their best.

I was up for a career change from a Microbiologist at the time and enrolled to study Holistic Nutrition with the goal being that I would really figure out how to do this Raw Food thing properly and attain Ultimate Health!

My amazing teachers quickly showed me how out of balance I was.

The fact is that there are a lot of Vegetarians, Vegans, and Raw Foodists out there who are not healthy. Who are so focused on the right and wrong foods to eat that they miss the messages sent daily from their bodies. Those messages look like fatigue, stomach aches, headaches, food sensitivities, dysmennorhea, adult acne. The list goes on and on. The important point to see here is that something is disrupting BALANCE. These are the same symptoms that can be seen in a person living on processed nutrient devoid foods. Balance is in the middle of the spectrum that runs from Excess to Deficiency, and a lot of Plant-based eaters continue on the spectrum and miss the point of balance and end up in Deficiency.

This is where I come in. Balance is easy to find. In fact you already know how to get there…you just have to listen. I work with clients to re-connect with their inner intuitions and desires to be able to truly nourish themselves.

My Nutritional Services target those that are already educated and health-conscious, but who also are experiencing symptoms of imbalance or dis-ease.

I help plant-based foodies who have energy crashes and digestive distresses to feel amazing by re-programming their food choices. As a holistic nutritionist I provide nutritional education to empower people to understand the healing and therapeutic properties of food.

  • You are healthy, but carry more weight than you want to
  • You are healthy, but have some nagging issues like stomach aches or frequent fatigue
